The Past Simple expresses an action that is finished and completed in the past.
The form of the Past Simple is the same for all persons.

1) For regular verbs, the normal rule is to add -ed.

Present Simple Past Simple
work worked
walk walked
ask asked
start started


2) If the verb has one syllable, and finishes in a vowel and a consonant, double the consonant and add -ed.

Present Simple Past Simple
stop stopped
plan planned
mug mugged
nut nutted


3) If the verb ends in a consonant + -y, the y changes into -ied.

Present Simple Past Simple
study studied
empty emptied
carry carried
glory gloried
